Free, dignified disposal of
worn, unserviceable United States flags

Dear Friends of FuneralSearch.com:

The United States Flag Code, Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8 (k) states: "The flag, when it is in such a condition that is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

In the past, if you had a worn flag in your possession, you could drop it off at a local VFW or American Legion Post. In some parts of the country this is still a viable option. However, many of these fine organizations are closing as older, World War II veterans die. This is a sad state of affairs and hopefully younger veterans will keep these associations alive.

To solve this problem, the editors of FuneralSearch.com now offer our advertisers the opportunity to provide the honorable and necessary service of disposing of worn American flags in their communities.

How does it work? Simply look for an American flag graphic (Flag disposition graphic)) next to a firm's name. If you see this symbol, neatly fold the flag and drop it off at their establishment.

What will happen to the flag? We suggest that locations properly fold the flag and place it in a cardboard container. Once the container is full, it will be cremated. Realistically, it may take a year (or longer) to fill one alternative container.

We have no doubt that some progressive firms will create a special tribute service when the flags are cremated and some firms may involve local VFW or American Legion Posts. What matters most is that the "retired" flags are shown the respect they deserve.

FuneralSearch.com will update this page as this program develops.

Thanks for visiting FuneralSearch.com!
